Puerto Rico Crime Map
This is an interactive map that portrays a holistic view of crime incidences within the territory of Puerto Rico from 2012 to 2018. It is a passion project that attempts to pull data made publicly available by the Police Department of Puerto Rico into a format that is more legible for the general public.
The map is composed of two main elements. First is a color map of each county block that correlates to the number of crime incidences found in and around each region. These colors range linearly on an RGB scale that shows the areas were less crimes where committed (Green) next to those regions where crime was more prevalent (Deep Red). Second, in order to portray a holistic view of the data, I’ve found it necessary to include all the crime incidences for each year with their exact location and associated description on the map as well. You can toggle these on and off using the “Toggle Crime Incidents” button found on the right and click on each occurrence to display the details associated with that particular crime. You can explore both of these elements for different years by clicking the menu on the bottom right that changes the year from 2012-2018.
I’ve paid special attention to logging all the sources and methodology used in the creation of this map. If you’re interested in how this tool was built, as well as some of the general conclusions drawn throughout the process, feel free to read the explanatory blog post on this site or visit the the GitHub page where I’ve uploaded all the data sets used in this project.
